Yom Kippur, that glorious orgy of rabbinic self-congratulation, begins Friday evening, Oct. 7, whereby the western world will watch in awe as "pious Jews" beg God for forgiveness, strive for righteousness and, in the run-up to the holy day, transfer their sins to a...chicken.(DONT LAUGH , I AM SERIOUS!) It's called "KAPAROT". It doesn't fit the misty, gauzy, Spielbergian image of Orthodox Judaism, does it? Talmudists shlugging (twirling) a chicken over their heads in the belief that by reciting the Mahzor prayers while doing so, they are transferring their sins to the chicken!
